Malignant Melanoma

by Anne Baxter
(San Francisco, CA, USA)

I have a friend, who I will call Janie, who likes to go dirt biking in the desert with her family.

She has been doing this for a number of years, and has no plans whatsoever to stop doing it.

She has also never worn any kind of sunscreen or sun block, and has stated that she has no plans to wear it in the future.

Janie was recently diagnosed with Malignant Melanoma.

Fortunately, her doctor caught it early and it was surgically removed.

I have noticed that among most melanoma patients, there is a sort of pattern.

There is a refusal to wear any kind of sun protection and repeated exposure to the sun.

It does strike me that this is a very preventable kind of affliction.

I wish more people would take even very basic steps to protect their skin, both for their own sake and for the sake of the people who love them.
